Keystones To Spiritual Growth

This article by John-Roger was first published in the Movement Newspaper, May 1985. The term spirituality has been referred to as growth, progression, samadhi, ecstasy, and much more. However, the spiritual path usually begins when you touch into a sense of dissatisfaction. Although, you may be experiencing the dissatisfaction, it is often unclear as to why you’re dissatisfied. Perhaps you feel your spouse doesn’t love you, or that you haven’t received enough support on your job. Whatever the reason appears to be, you can use the dissatisfaction as a stepping stone to spiritual progress. You may wish to substitute the word discouragement for dissatisfaction and that’s fine. It is important, however, that you don’t get caught in vocabulary definitions. Once we see it neutrally, we can use it to our spiritual advantage.

In the next stage of our spiritual progress we usually choose one of two paths. One leads into the world, in search of the opportunities it offers to help us overcome our discouragement, attempting to fulfill this new feeling of Godliness – the Divine within us. Some people refer to this path as the ego. The other path usually occurs when people choose to look within themselves to confront these difficulties. By this time they’ve already looked at their faults, their mistakes and how they’ve misrepresented themselves and others.

Many times, people who are attempting to illuminate themselves are attracted to groups of people who are making similar efforts to uplift their consciousness. We all seem to be looking for answers to those age-old questions: Why am I here? What is life? What is this meaning which cannot be answered? Nothing on the planet has ever answered those questions, except the Spirit. And it has given us the answers many, many times.

The path of Spirit will lead us into a focus of Light and with this can come a feeling of euphoria. Sometimes we experience physical healings to parts of our body, or we anticipate receiving a healing and we don’t. Then we wonder why? It may be that your Higher Self has decided to keep the situation as it is. If your body were to become absolutely perfect, it could not exist here, because this is not a level of perfection.

Perfection is not a keystone of spiritual progress. Illumination is the process of knowing that you are in the state of lifting. In the state of lifting you can still get mosquito bites. You can still have car accidents and ingrown toenails; they just don’t bother you as much. When our consciousness is lifting we are no longer concerned about where we find ourselves, more so, the direction in which we are going. Regardless of what level we’re on, there are higher laws governing these levels and as you learn each one of them, you become freer, until at one point you become the supreme law.

Then we realize why, in all our stages of spiritual growth, we had such difficulty. Because some part of us was already there, living in the highest realms of Light and Spirit, but were not yet awakened to it. The difficulty comes when we continually separate ourselves from who we are, the supreme law.

The day when you awaken to the supreme law of Spirit, you don’t levitate, or walk on water, or heal the blind, because in that, you have violated the law which people have created for themselves to come into and manifest. Your job becomes one of holding love for them. Not necessarily one of loving them, but holding the love. This love becomes your keystone of understanding. Love is often both of you looking in the same direction. Love is often saying, I am there even when you cannot reach me. Love is when you call my name, and if it can be done unto you, it will be done. That is the love that sustains. Any other love is one that will give us emotional turmoil and that will cause us to focus in on our inadequacy. But there can be no end to our spiritual progression, because there has never been a beginning. There is only now. About this time, you start to amalgamate your energies and in that amalgamation you become the oneness within yourself. In that oneness, you begin to experience that the Divine which is in one, is in all.
