The Value of Meetup.com

As many of you know, I’ve been living in New York. From there, I work remotely as the Soul Awareness Seminars Coordinator.

One of the things I do is help to support MSIA in the NY community. I had an opportunity to do just that through meetup.com. For those of you who aren’t familiar with meetup, it’s a website where you can search “meetups” in your area, such as workshops and special-interest gatherings like hiking, meditation, cooking, etc. Some MSIA communities have started meetup groups as a way to share MSIA events and seminars, and New York is one of them.

NY’s past Rep James Chew started a “ Fun and Simply Spiritual Living ” group, where folks can get together informally (e.g., at the park, for coffee, etc.) and share together about spirituality. The group description doesn’t mention MSIA, so it’s an open way for members to get to know each other and if interested, learn more about MSIA in conversation.

When James moved to LA, another member Lena stepped forward as an organizer. Lena knew nothing about MSIA or the group, and she just wanted to get spiritual meetups going! We met, and I told her about MSIA and how the meetup started. We decided to offer a range of spiritual gatherings in our meetup, including MSIA events.

At one point, Lena asked if MSIA has an introductory workshop. This was so neat, because I hadn’t pushed MSIA at all…I just shared from my heart and was open to what Lena wanted to do. We set up an “Introduction to Soul Transcendence” in her apartment for Sept. 11.

The workshop was beautiful! We had 3 participants entirely new to MSIA, and me. Five other new people had RSVPed and couldn’t make it — so quite a lovely interest in what MSIA has to offer! We covered many practical techniques for Soul Transcendence, including breathing, spiritual exercises, Discourses, and the Mystical Traveler. The focus was on participants having an experience of Soul awareness, rather than on the information.

I don’t know if these 3 people – or the additional 5 who registered – will sign up for Discourses. What I do know is that Spirit was so present, and that each person was touched by the Traveler in a way perfect for them. Personally, I was moved by the opportunity to serve and to plant seeds for the teachings. It was quite a blessing.

If you’d like to start your own meetup group, it’s easy! Simply go to meetup.com, sign up, and click on “Start a Group”. The steps are pretty self-explanatory. (Signing up is free; starting a group costs $10-15/month.) Here are 3 meetup groups started by MSIA volunteers to give you a few options for what you could do:

Live in Peace ” in Boston: Peacemaker meetings

Connect with Your Soul ” in LA:  Events at Prana & Santa Monica

Finding Peace through Meditation ” in TX: MSIA seminars on meditation

Feel free to contact with questions @ DebbieRoth@msia.org . Many blessings to all!
