Granada, Spain
We begin the morning with a sunrise walk through the Albayzin area. The Albayzin area of Grenada is a charming, Medieval-style town and a World Heritage Site. Albayzin actually has ancient roots that go as far back as the Roman era, but much of its architecture in existence is from the 11th Century. The morning walk is picturesque as if walking through a fairytale town of cobblestone roads, stunning flowers, and everything looks like it was drawn from a painting.
After a delightful morning walk, we head to the Alhambra which is a beautiful castle with a long fascinating history. The Alhambra is a fortress built on 899 over Roman ruins. This castle is one of my favorites for the design. The castle is a product of many centuries of work and over 400 years or so, natural and human damage was periodically repaired and rebuilt. Old photographs show the shocking disrepair. It has now been restored to reflect its former glory and stands as significantly as it once did. Columbus was given royal endorsement for his expedition in the castle. The buildings are decorated with texts from the Quran written in stucco around doors and windows known as arabesques.
One of the most beautiful buildings in this area is the Royal Chapel, which was commissioned by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. The Royal Chapel is a reflection of the faith of the āCatholic Monarchs,ā as the pair were known. The chapel is still in use, and if you visit in the morning, you can hear the songs of the nuns floating down the street. As Ferdinand and Isabella desired, their remains are laid to rest in the church. You can see their tomb, which includes sculptures by Dominico Fancelli.
The group gathers for an evening meal at the most beautiful restaurant which can only be described as “Amore.” The beef ribs are out of this world as we are sung to by two singers to begin our meal festivities.
