Spain & Portugal Tour 2017 | The Way of the Traveler | Day 11

Silos, Leon, Oviedo

It is 4 am and time to wake up, jump on the computer, load the equipment, eat and board the bus. We have a morning surprise today waiting for us in Silos. Sleepy-eyed we travel from Burgos to Silos and arrive at The Monastery de Santo Domingo de Silos to listen to the Gregorian morning chanting of the Monks. The chanted prayer of the monks at Silos occurs six times a day in the monastery church. The Monastery is the home of the monks made famous when their CD, Chant, was released in 1994. The current monastery was founded in the 10th century over a ruined Visigothic monastery that was destroyed during an 8th-century incursion from Muslim invaders.

We board the bus to our next destination, Oviedo. We take a quick break to use the restrooms, and the rest stop is so charming, we all stay for some coffee and pastries. Another hour or so on the bus and we arrive at our lunch destination to be treated to legs of Lamb so large that it was as if the chef traveled back into time to bring forward a replication of the food from 500 years ago. Back on the bus to Oviedo.

To top off the amazing morning of Gregorian Chanting next is the history of the Holy Cloth of Jesus. We stop for a lunch and are greeted by Dr. Guscin, a renowned shroud scholar, historian, and linguist. I am entranced as Dr. Guscin begins talking and detailing all the aspects surrounding the shroud and what evidence he has unraveled as to the accuracy of the truth behind the shroud. Here is a link for more details of the Shroud by Dr. Guscin: https://www.shroud.com/guscin.htm

Now it is time to see the Holy Cloth. We visit The Holy Chamber of Oviedo known as Camara Santa which is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Oviedo, Spain. The Holy Chamber of Oviedo was constructed in the 9th century. The Church was originally the private chapel of King Alfonso II. The Holy Chamber of Oviedo today houses some of the most delicate and important relics of the Asturias region. The Holy Chamber of Oviedo was built specifically to house precious jewels and priceless relics of the main cathedral of San Salvador in Oviedo.

The most revered relic in the Holy Chamber of Oviedo is the “Sudarium of Oviedo.” The Sudarium of Oviedo is a piece of cloth measuring approximately 84 x 53cm. It is a clean piece of cloth, bearing no images. The only stains believed to be blood are visible but even more visible when placed under a microscope. The astonishing thing about the cloth is that both traditional and scientific reports claim that the cloth was used to cover and clean the face of Jesus after he was crucified. There are claims of certain biblical verses supporting the credibility of the story in the gospel of John. Chapter 20, verses 6 and 7. The credence of the Sudarium of Oviedo is well documented and detailed. Most of the information was sourced from the 12th Century bishop Pelayo of Oviedo whose historical works are in the Book of the Testaments of Oviedo and the Chronicon Regum Legionensium. The Holy Chamber of Oviedo is a great site for history and theology enthusiasts for its age, religious relevance, and architecture. Just above the entrance door, a cast of the heads of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The Camara Santa was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1998.

As we exit the Church, the Oviedo town is setting up for its festival for the Patron Saint of the City, San Mateo. The whole city is full of families, concerts, activities, and sweets vendors. It looks like a painting out of a historic museum come alive.

To top off the day, we head to the most fabulous Seafood restaurant in Ovideo to partake of the waiter staff entertaining us with a custom of pouring apple cider into a cup without looking, with cider splashing all over. The seafood platters come out with heaping mounds of crustaceans followed by a large steak or choice of fish. Out of this world food and stomach full it is time for bed.
