Spain & Portugal Tour 2017 | The Way of the Traveler | Day 12

Asturias, Covadonga Shrine, Picos De Europa, Ribadesella | Spain

It is a beautiful day and we are on our way to the Lady of Covadonga Shrine, built to commemorate the victory of Covadonga, the first battle (722 A.D.) in the Spanish reconquest from the Moors and the reestablishment of the kingdom of Asturias.

The shrine, which is built into a side of a mountain is a miracle itself and it houses an image of the Virgin Mary. The original shrine, built in the VIII century, was destroyed in 1777 and rebuilt in 1901.

We board the bus and continue on driving up higher to the Picos de Europa National Park which is a National Park mountain range in northern Spain. The drive up is precarious in a small bus with a road that is built for one vehicle and winding curves that are not for the meek. We cheer gratefully as our bus driver delivers us safely to the mountain. The park is stunning and John shares and does a blessing with the lake and mountain range set as the backdrop. The Traveler Blessing takes us away and it is heaven on earth. Free time follows to take in the beauty all around us and as we board the bus we are left in awe.

We head off to another great lunch along the way. Our last stop is a small fishing village, Ribadesella. The main center of Ribadesella is the grand palace of Pietro Cutre of the 17th century. Frescos adorn the vaults of the local church and it has been recently restored. Ribadesella is famous for the Tito Bustillo Cave which is a prehistoric rock shelter and is a world UNESCO site. There are 16 caves which have evidence of human habitation dating back 15,000 years. You can also find dinosaur tracks at the western end of the beach at Santa Marina and the cliffs of Terenes. At the far end of Ribadesella are the beaches of Vega and Berbes. As we depart, the rain comes pouring down and we are all very grateful to be inside the bus and dry.

We arrive at our hotel and head off to our rooms with great anticipation of our Camino walk tomorrow.

  1. Wow, I was transported by David’s photos. I was so touched, I shed a few tears. Julie’s writings are always succinct and clear, creating a fine narrative that gives context for it all. Thank you, Julie and David.
