Poems by Children at the Cajundome Shelter for Hurricane Katrina Evacuees in Lafayette Louisiana

Compiled by MSIA Minister Sandy Lyne

MSIA Minister, Sandy Lyne, has been volunteering at the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana, where evacuees from hurricane Katrina have been residing. Sandy sent a brief update about the service work that he and many others are doing at the Cajundome. You can read Sandy’s update here. Sandy has been doing poetry and writing with children and their moms. Here are poems shared by some of these children with their permission:

Love. . .that is really something thick.
Mother, Father, you should love them both.
They were with you through all your childhood.
When you were bad they still loved you with all their heart.
Sometimes I sit down and cry cause it tears me apart.
The pain I have is really bad.
It is a blessing to have them here.
It’s really a blessing.
Carlos Owens, Grade 6, from Slidell, Louisiana

WASHED AWAY
My house is washed away, no longer here.
Once we go back home we will share so many tears.
We might have lost our homes
but we never lost our love for one another.
We have been so blessed.
Let the Lord come in
and show you the best.
Candice Owens, Grade 5, from Slidell, Louisiana

FLOODED
My house is flooded very much
you can say.
People say half of Slidell
is washed away.
So many things people hear and say.
I don’t care.
I want to say it face to face.
Candice Owens, Grade 5, from Slidell, Louisiana

It has been a struggle for us
the last few days, but the Lord has made a way.
The Lord will take this pain away
if we pray.
Katie Owens, Grade 6, from Slidell, Louisiana

Hurricane Katrina gave us many warnings.
Parents have some struggles.
There were many tears.
But not that everything is gone
and we are alone.
God is in our lives still.
Carlisha Gilbert, Grade 9, from Jefferson Parish, Louisiana

My mother has so many fears
and a lot of tears.
Her heart is broken.
She hides behinds her shadows.
She says she’s been abused
and she has many secrets,
but she will survive,
but she has to make changes
because I can’t do it by myself.
Carlisha Gilbert, Grade 9, from Jefferson Parish, Louisiana
