This is a lively conversation between John Morton, Spiritual Director of MSIA, and Laren Bright in which a question that arises is: if you were faced with an imminent inevitable disaster such as your boat sinking, how would you want to relate to that experience? Would you panic, or bemoan your fate, or would you go to an inner calm place?
The talk addresses how to create and recognize a personal spiritual compass for those times great and small when it is needed. A small need would be some daily difficulty or temptation which you might be considering. A great need would be something life-threatening or a chance to assist someone else while putting yourself in harm’s way. Where do you go for guidance in right thinking or right doing?
John says, “There’s an order to our existence; there’s a way things function that we relate to, like laws. And those laws have importance. If we are to realize ourselves spiritually, we find ourselves functioning with acceptance, cooperation, understanding, enthusiasm, and empathy. When we are aligned with this spiritual compass and we use it as the reference point for how we conduct our life, really good things happen, blessings happen.”
