In this talk, John Morton asks, “What is your commitment to peace?” Oh. You’ve heard that question before? Read on.
Delivered July 4th on behalf of the Institute for Individual and World Peace, John Morton’s theme is how you and I can actually participate in promoting peace on the planet.
John starts out by noting the commitment of those who signed the U.S. Declaration of Independence, including a signer named John Morton! He marvels at their dedication, even though they knew they were putting their lives and livelihoods on the line.
Then John comes closer to the present day, telling a story of his trip to Kandahar, Afghanistan, shortly after the September 11 tragedy in America. The story itself is thoroughly engaging. John describes what he saw of the poverty and destruction in Kandahar, and he says, “you could say, It is too vast; there’s too much disturbance and trouble to handle.”
That’s the attitude that never goes anywhere,” he observes. “The attitude that makes a difference is, ‘I’ll do what I can.’ And that is really what I have to say today. Let us just do what we can to move toward a world that has greater peace in it, because,” he says, “we’re all in charge of our own peace.” John concludes with a deeply felt blessing for peace.
