This Spiritual Treasure Hunt

Lisa Boone with John-Roger at a fundraiser dinner in Massachusetts in 2004.

Truly, my life over 30 years ago was very typical life-on-planet-earth stuff. OK, I read The Prophet by Khalil Gibran at age 17 which had a huge impact on me, but other than that I was just going through the motions of my life, sort of the way Dave Matthews sings about in his song Ants Marching:

He wakes up in the morning
Does his teeth bite to eat and he’s rolling
Never changes a thing
The week ends the week begins
She thinks, we look at each other
Wondering what the other is thinking
But we never say a thing
These crimes between us grow deeper
(From “Ants Marching” by Dave Matthews)

Story time: It was about 30 years ago. I sat my now ex-husband down and said, “This can’t be all that we are on the planet for (“this” meaning a day-to-day normal existence – beautiful kids, nice home, good job, etc.). You need to know that I don’t know what I’m looking for, but from this day forward I am looking for it.” I suspect he thought I was a bit crazy. It was within weeks of this proclamation that my life began to change in strange and miraculous ways.

I usually don’t share my sacred experiences, but since I have shared this one in the past, I’ll share it again here to give you an idea of what began to happen:

It was maybe 1990 and I was sleeping on a futon in my then dining room (my life was in turmoil; divorce looming) and I was awakened by a voice saying, “Follow the path of the Masters of Light and I will guide you.” I remember bolting to an upright position to listen again. It repeated, “Follow the path of the Masters of Light and I will guide you.” My kids were young enough to have an arts and crafts basket near to where the futon was, so I grabbed an index card and an orange crayon and wrote it down. I still have it all these years later. This event coupled with other visionary experiences of a sacred nature had me wondering if these were the “flashbacks” we baby boomers were warned about from past recreational drug use (LOL), or could it be the answer to my seeking as to why we are really here? Thank God it was (and is) the latter.  This experience was my inner meeting with the Traveler. The outer came not long afterward.

My answer to this invitation at the time was “yes!” and remains “yes!” each and every day. This Spiritual Treasure Hunt is ever-present and ongoing for me (and all of us really). I just began paying attention, opening my heart, and practicing Soul Transcendence as taught by J-R.

So, all this adoration for my beloved friend and Spiritual Guide, J-R, is because he pointed the way to a door in my heart that I didn’t know existed, handed me keys, showed me how to unlock the door for myself, and awakened a glorious song of love inside my heart.  He would not, could not do it for me. How do you thank someone who guided you to knowledge of yourself as a Soul? With the song in my heart, of course.

A friend who taught me right from wrong
And weak from strong that’s a lot to learn
What can I give you in return?
If you wanted the moon
I would try to make a start but I
Would rather you let me give my heart
To sir with love
(From “To Sir With Love” by Lulu)

“All that you want to be, you already are.
All you have to do is move your awareness there and recognize the reality of your own Soul.”
—John-Roger, D.S.S., founder of MSIA

  1. Lisa, what a delightful and sacred story of your path to the Traveler. I had a smile on my face reading your journey.
