Day 16 of the China Trip with the Travelers

Article imageThis is the fifteenth in a series of articles and images from NDH correspondent, David Sand, on the road in China with John-Roger, John Morton and 106 traveling peacemakers.

August 29

Buses leave the Oriental Hotel in Wuhan for our flight to Hong Kong. We see the usual early-morning exercisers out in front.

A few nice shots coming into the islands from the air and after we land we’re bused to the plush Regent Hotel right on the harbor in Hong Kong.

It’s so good to be out of mainland China and back in civilization. Usually we go from pleasure to sudden pain and the return to pleasure is gradual (e.g., you hit your thumb with a hammer and it takes a week to heal) but every once in a while you get to go from pain into sudden pleasure, and the intense contrast is delicious.

The physical pleasures (I’ve been doing very little except taking baths in the sunken tub in my marble bathroom, and eating salad (SALAD!!!) in the restaurant) are minor compared to the psychic relief of bathing in the cleanliness, order, and light of the western world. It’s not that being in China was very painful physically. We were well taken care of, staying in relatively nice places. But there is a gradual, psychic effect. To believe that material things or laws or governments will change China is really looking at things backwards. As I see it, there is a consciousness over these places that’s creating the physical-level results, and once the consciousness changes everything else will follow. I think that’s why we went there. Although I can see very little of what was actually being done on the inner levels, I’m glad to be able to do what I can in the effort. It’s not such a tough job, and it’s really not so bad when you’re in it because you lose your reference point for anything else until you actually leave–sort of like being on this planet.

Here is a view of the Hong Kong harbor from my room:

Tomorrow we tour around a bit in Hong Kong, and I’ll send some photos, but the impulse to keep doing this is waning. It’s a bit like sending back photos of L.A. Perhaps staying at this beautiful hotel on the water for a couple of days is the Traveler’s way of thanking us for the work we’re doing, and so far I’m enjoying my vacation.
