Memorial for Jack Espey

Everyone who knew Jack Espey was shocked and saddened at his sudden and unexpected passing in July. Anti-War activist, architect, horseman, handyman, Santa Claus and so much more, Jack went through many phases in life and excelled at whatever he chose to do next.

Loved in life and beloved now, a memorial service for Jack held at Prana was inevitable and well attended. Laren Bright was called upon to MC the event. He kept the solemn occasion moving and sacred at the same time.

Wendy Vahanian read a short bio of Jack’s life that was a revelation to those people who knew of only one or two aspects of his life. Following the reading, a slide show of Jack’s life was presented which served to illustrate the biography. This was followed by a heartfelt sharing from Jack’s longtime partner Bambi Scott who knew him best. She was followed by her niece Gabriella Vahanian who shared a tribute from Jack’s daughter Heather who now lives in Texas.

Several people who knew Jack well eulogized him. These included George Scott, Gregory Vahanian, Francesca Pappagailo from The Grove, Linda Boston Franke, Clark Franke and Glenn Barnett. Each talked about their experiences with Jack and served to illuminate a life well lived. Among other things, we were reminded of Jack’s favorite epithet, ‘turkey butt’, the worst thing he had to say about anyone.

This was followed by an open sharing at the microphone for others who were moved to relate their experience of Jack. Representatives from The Grove shared their admiration for his work as Santa. The afternoon service ended with a recording of Amazing Grace and a final blessing and closing from Laren.

John-Roger sometimes quoted Shakespeare to make a point, and a line from Hamlet sums up my feelings about Jack. “He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again.” We all loved Jack and we know that we will not see his like again.
