\non the cypress out by the dunes.
\nIt gathers like rain on the cornices
\nof the library and the jail
\nand the small theater next to the park.<\/p>\n
\nunder the piers, as though held
\nby the gaze of the moon
\nwhile we slept in the dark, holding on
\nto each other and dreaming of ships and horses.<\/p>\n
\npoincettia plants cover the sidewalk
\noutside the big hardware store.
\nThey light up the morning and the bright
\nred sleeves of the Salvation Army woman
\nringing her bell
\nunder the sign that says
\n\u201cYou Make the Difference\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nyet we\u2019re the same
\nfeeding our sheep on the hillsides
\nor traveling west in the Magi\u2019s train,
\nmaking straight the way for the Lord
\nand for the first water to break and fall
\nthrough the birth-light blossoming
\nin the landscapes of Advent
\nand the great Sound blessing us all.<\/p>\n
