Chuck Millar, beloved long-time MSIA minister and initiate, passed into Spirit on December 15th<\/sup>, 2019,\u00a0right as the final process of the Living in Grace retreat at Asilomar was coming to a close.\u00a0 Chuck served as Team Captain at Living in Grace for many years, so his passing at that sacred time of the retreat seems quite fitting.<\/p>\n

This poem is from his brother Joe Millar.<\/p>\n

FORGIVENESS
\nfor Chuck<\/p>\n

I took a sip of black tea and honey
\ncrossing the bay at night
\non the way to his last Christmas service
\nand he asked me, What are you drinking,
\nbound as he was to the feeding tube,
\nhis mouth full of cancer-phlegm.<\/p>\n

He was wrapped up
\nin his coat and scarf,
\nthe Greek fisherman\u2019s cap
\nhe often wore
\nand the tumor in his cheek
\nhardly smelled at all
\nthanks to numerous chemical scrubbings
\nand a fresh dressing of cotton and gauze.<\/p>\n

Also there was a cold rain
\nstinging against the windshield
\nand a fitful December wind
\ngusting in from the west.
\nIt wouldn\u2019t be the King Tide coming in,
\nnot for another three weeks.
\nIt wasn\u2019t the Solstice
\nor a falling star
\nor a penumbral eclipse.<\/p>\n

It was my brother\u2019s cool
\nfine-boned hand
\nresting on mine in the front seat
\nfor one calm, deliberate moment
