{"id":110588,"date":"2021-07-01T09:57:08","date_gmt":"2021-07-01T16:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.msia.org\/newdayherald\/?p=110588"},"modified":"2021-07-01T09:57:08","modified_gmt":"2021-07-01T16:57:08","slug":"a-scribe-for-the-traveler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.msia.org\/newdayherald\/archives\/110588-a-scribe-for-the-traveler","title":{"rendered":"A Scribe for the Traveler"},"content":{"rendered":" \u00a0 \n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"> <em>Mary Vaessen with John-Roger on the 1984 PAT IV trip.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mary Vaessen received the Volunteer of the Year award at the Minister&#8217;s Meeting during the Conference of the Heart of Soul Transcendence, June 27, 2021.\u00a0 At our request, Mary graciously wrote about her volunteer service to the John-Roger Library.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have to be reminded that the work I do with the J-R Library is volunteer service, because it seems more like joyful play with the Traveler.<\/p>\n<p>I started transcribing J-R tapes back in the 1980\u2019s, before computers or technology of any sort.\u00a0 The hot item was erasable typing paper which made typewriter errors correctable, sort of.\u00a0 I would wait for a cassette tape to arrive in the mail, and then the fun would begin.\u00a0 It took a long time to transcribe a tape using a typewriter but having a stack of papers to mail back to MSIA was very satisfying.<\/p>\n<p>Back when the J-R Library and Archives was being born, my friend Theresa Hocking was involved in the early-stage informal discussions since she is a librarian.\u00a0 I went along for the ride, sitting in on a couple of staff conversations about the future library.\u00a0 I was asked at one point how I saw my involvement with the library.\u00a0 My mind went blank, and I think my response was \u201cduh?\u201d\u00a0 I obviously was not seeing the vision at that time.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere in the past century (80\u2019s or 90\u2019s maybe) I applied for an MSIA job to work with J-R\u2019s materials.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t get the job and was told by J-R that it wasn\u2019t in the cosmic mirror (like what is this cosmic mirror thing, I wondered at the time.\u00a0 I had never been turned down for a job with the reason being cosmic mirror).\u00a0 I was devastated, but J-R has more than made up for it by providing me with all these opportunities and the blessings that came with them. \u00a0Definitely a better plan.<\/p>\n<p>Working with the Traveler\u2019s materials is an integral part of my life.\u00a0 Whenever a new project arrives\u2014now in my computer inbox\u2014it\u2019s like Christmas, and I can hardly wait to get started.\u00a0 A day when I\u2019ve gotten up on the wrong side of the bed gets immediately turned around when I delve into a project.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m so grateful that there is now a real J-R Library and Archives, with a plan and focus to preserve these sacred materials.\u00a0 I love working with all the staff who have provided me with projects, both past and present staff.\u00a0 Perhaps in the distant future there will be a PAT IIIIVVVV trip where folks will be walking around ruins and the tour guide will say:\u00a0 \u201cand this is where the world-famous J-R Library once stood that housed the sacred scrolls that have been preserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sometimes ponder what I would do if all of the Traveler\u2019s materials were finally in perfect order\u2014transcribed, checked, published, recorded and safely archived in the salt mines.\u00a0 I guess I could dig out a typewriter and erasable paper and start over because it would all be new to me\u2026again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mary Vaessen received the Volunteer of the Year award at the Minister&#8217;s Meeting during the Conference of the Heart of Soul Transcendence, June 27, 2021.\u00a0 At our request, Mary graciously wrote about her volunteer service to the John-Roger Library.
