{"id":112326,"date":"2025-05-14T14:48:16","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T21:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.msia.org\/newdayherald\/?p=112326"},"modified":"2025-05-15T12:05:53","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T19:05:53","slug":"easter-monday-bright-monday-a-poem-by-joseph-millar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.msia.org\/newdayherald\/archives\/112326-easter-monday-bright-monday-a-poem-by-joseph-millar","title":{"rendered":"Easter Monday, Bright Monday &#8212; A Poem by Joseph Millar"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><strong>Easter Monday, Bright Monday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Outside my window somebody\u2019s tapping<\/p>\n<p>against the steel frame<\/p>\n<p>of the warehouse next door<\/p>\n<p>where they restore old American cars<\/p>\n<p>and it sounds like a dirge<\/p>\n<p>in four-four time, or the pealing<\/p>\n<p>of an iron bell.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m grateful to be alive today<\/p>\n<p>driving to town over the tracks,<\/p>\n<p>past the refinery with its brackish air<\/p>\n<p>and the boatyard\u2019s resinous smell.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d like to bring some roses and jasmine<\/p>\n<p>to the place where they\u2019ll bury Pope Francis<\/p>\n<p>where he\u2019ll drift out from shore<\/p>\n<p>and not look back,<\/p>\n<p>the jury of cardinals like orphans<\/p>\n<p>locked up together behind him,<\/p>\n<p>not for the first time or the last.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d carry a heart made of dusty glass beads<\/p>\n<p>and wear a dress shirt with purple sleeves<\/p>\n<p>and keep on looking forward like him<\/p>\n<p>letting the past be the past.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joseph Millar<br \/>\nMonday, April 21, 2025<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Easter Monday, Bright Monday Outside my window somebody\u2019s tapping against the steel frame of the warehouse next door where they restore old American cars and it sounds like a dirge in four-four time, or the pealing of an iron bell.
