People say, “I want to bring this thing to an end in a good way.” Things don’t end in good ways. They end because they’re not good anymore. When you sense that people whom you love are hurt or being hurt or going to be hurt, that Spirit is shut down, and so there’s a grief form in there. It hasn’t grieved itself to let go, to open again. But it’s a very simple method of opening. All you have to do when you’re in that is have somebody who loves you touch you. When you think back to any of those times, you can reach over to your husband, if you’re in the car, and just grab his hand and hold it for a minute and let that open up the Spirit. You’ll know it’s open because it starts to get warm and full in there. And you may find tears come up. You may find sadness comes up with it, and you may find that goes on for a period of time until that comes clean from you. That doesn’t mean that you won’t experience some anxiety, that things are just going to be perfect from now on, because you’re still heir to the things of the body. Just inside, beyond all the emotional psychological things, there’s something that goes, “I’m okay.” I would listen to that one. On the way over I was in the back of the boat and other people rowed. They put wreaths and garlands around me and decorated me because I was the king of the boat. They helped me up the mountain, and they carried all my packs and everything. When we slept, they fixed everything. Then I got to meet the master, he initiated me, and on the way back I carried the bags, I rowed the boat. I couldn’t believe it. But on the way back I remember somebody else came along, and we were sitting in the back of the boat and rowing, and I was laughing because on the way back that person was going to row. From that point I’ve just never got it inside of me that one is greater than the other, it’s just that we’re all doing different things at different times. At times when I fall people pick me up, at times when they fall I pick them up, but we’re all rowing the boat because we’re all in it. And it’s just that we all smile with the knowledge that the new one that comes in and thinks they’re so wonderful and great, they’re going to be part of the ordinariness before long because the master reduces us to ordinariness, which is just that prior condition to God.

When you get to a certain place and you see the wonder of it all, it really does humble you. You immediately realize you’re serving the God form in many things and so you just go on about your business. There are many people who won’t like us when we do that.

– John-Roger
Living in Grace Retreat, March 1990

Spirit will open your spiritual eye for you when you are indeed ready to enter into it. It will open it. Yours is to make yourself available to recognize it when it’s open. And so, as the old saying goes, you sit at the feet of the Lord and look all day at his eyes in case he glances your way. And that’s going to take a lot of patience. At the same time, it moves very fast. It never moves by when we’re focusing upon discomfort. When you’re focusing upon the comfort of what you’re looking for it goes by very, very fast.

– John-Roger
Living in Grace Retreat, March 1990

A person told me that the definition of a cult is just a group of people without any political power. I thought about that and thought, well, the army brain-washes people to do what they say, to march when they say, to fight and kill what they say, and they’ve got the power to enforce it. Do you know what kind of power we have to enforce it when people don’t do what we want? Nothing. I thought, maybe we should have a penitence stock where they put their head through and then everybody gets to go and kiss them on the cheek until they can’t stand it.

– John-Roger
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 1990

The difficulty you’ve had in your relationships is you’ve closed down your Spirit. When people close their Spirit down, you might just as well get up and walk out of the room unless you’re going to do what’s necessary to open their Spirit back up again. A person who closes it down rarely knows how to open it back up. It’s very, very rare. They’ll maybe try alcohol or drugs to try to open it up. Or they’ll go out on a sex binge to try to open it. And the best way is to go to somebody whose Spirit’s open and let them touch you. It’s just a transmission of the Spirit and they start to open again. And hopefully that would be a counselor who also could then talk to you about how you close yourself down so you can at least guard against it. If it happens again, you go back in and have them reopen again and reopen and reopen, until one day you just refuse to shut your Spirit down to anybody.

When you shut your Spirit down it’s death in there. I know what it feels like too. I’ll bet everybody in this room knows what it feels like. And we don’t like that. We’d much rather have it open and that’s why we’re here doing this.

But you can’t run around the world to every religious group trying to find somebody to open your Spirit. Ultimately that’s your responsibility. You can keep your Spirit open by not throwing your brains away, not throwing away critical thinking. Throw away mentalizing and throw away negative thinking. You get those out of your way and go for the positive focus. Critical thinking is a good spiritual path to follow. Take your brains with you into a relationship, not just your body and emotions, and then a lot of hope.

– John-Roger
Living in Grace PAT, March 1990

Q: There are times when I keep thinking that’s it, I’ve blown it. But you always forgive me and you’re just always there.

J-R: Well, I do care. And I didn’t judge you so there was no reason to forgive you. What you were going through was hard enough without me putting anything on it. And knowing that was hard, often my thing was to stay a little clear of you so that I wouldn’t reflect it back to you, because when you see me look at you, inside you’d go, “Oh God, he sees that I’m failing.” So, then you’d be using me physically to hit yourself. Well, that’s not my job either, so I stay away often when people are in that, so they also don’t get to use me to beat themselves. I’ve done nothing but walk in and say, “Hello, how are you?” and I walk out and they have a week of how bad they are. Nevertheless, I’m here, so I run into people.

Now some people say, “Oh God, he came in, I’ll bet you that’s disappearing and going away.” That also takes place. What’s allowed to be lifted away it’ll certainly do it. But if it’s not allowed to be lifted away, it doesn’t mean that I’m not going to still love and care and stand there with the person and go with them as much as I can through that. But the decision of how fast to relieve karma from you or to take something away that you’re learning from, has to be based on your spiritual experience, not mine. If we take away a person’s suffering too soon, they don’t learn. Sometimes they have to get down to being sick and tired of being sick and tired. And then they’ll hand it to you. You don’t have to take it away.

– John-Roger
Living in Grace Retreat, March 1990

If God created us and said, “You’re going to go down there and experiment,” you’re probably going to be in the dark about what you’re creating for a long time. One day you go, “Aha! Eureka! There it is!” and you feel great. Then you go back into darkness for a long time. The darkness is the unconscious and out of that unconscious comes chaos, and out of chaos comes creation, and out of creation comes confusion, or cooperation. If you stop the confusion it starts to move ahead in its timing, and you flow with life. God, that’s so nice! For those are the days when you know God is in the Kingdom of Heaven inside of you, and God is functioning as you and you are God because you are functioning as that, and the joy is just unboundedly full. Once you tap that Soul energy and that joy comes up, do you know it’s amazing what you forgive in your worst enemy? You forgive them everything.

– John-Roger
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 1990

If I digress off what the Spirit flow is, it does not wait. If you people are going down the path of life, you’d better keep on your path. I don’t look back to see who’s following. I’ll tell you why. I’m too busy watching where I’m going. Every time I’ve looked back or to the side, or tried to be the savior of everybody, I fell down and got terribly hurt. Then I said, “Listen, if you’re going where I’m going, if you’re in front I’ll keep my eye on you, because I’ve learned to miss a lot of holes and mud by watching how people stepped in.” I step around it. So, it’s nice to have someone out there. But don’t look back because if I can’t make it, don’t let me stop you. And I don’t look back. If you’re going in your movement of spiritual inner awareness, please do not look back. One of the great teachings that the negative power taught us in scriptural rendition was when Lot took his wife and was leaving and he said, “Do not look back!” And by golly, she had to make sure what she was leaving, and she got nailed to the spot. What you’re leaving, folks, is well left.

Once you do anything, once you’ve finished your Spiritual Exercises, don’t look back at those s.e.’s. It doesn’t come out of this backwards. It actually is always present. You’re remembering back a few days ago and it’s right here in front of you because it’s always there.

– John-Roger
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 1990

If you have something with your neighbor that you don’t like, don’t go tell the neighborhood. I wouldn’t have done that to hurt you,” and you’re starting to heal. All you ever wanted to know is that people love you, and that God loves you, and the most important, that you love you.
