John-Roger begins this important seminar in this way. “Tonight I’m going to, as the old expression goes, ‘Slap the heaven out of the egos.’ So if your ego feels like it’s being pushed around, why don’t you look at it so you’ll know what it is. And of course if you’re perfect, none of this will apply to you.” With these words, J-R offers the solution and then goes on to spell out the challenges.

J-R says, “Ego: usually it gets me into trouble. How does it come about? How do I recognize it? How do I handle it?” And J-R’s response is, “The ego uses the illusions and the dreams to see it’s perfection. It sees things perfect.” This could look like all those times someone has told you they know better than you because they’re sure they do. Or when someone insisted they’re right because they’re sure they are, and that you’re wrong. Familiar?

“Let me tell you something interesting about that perfection of the ego,” J-R says.”It is not God’s perfection.” After commenting on all those ways our egos get us in trouble, J-R follows through the suggestion he made at the beginning. “You want to check the content of what you’re doing with your inner thoughts and your imagination. In that moment of observation you’ll be flooded with the Light of God that is present inside of you. Not ego light or emotional light. And often it will throw up all your negative shortcomings, so you can correct them and get away from them.”
