Another way to tell when you're not cooperating with what's going on is if you hear yourself say, "Yes, but…" The way to cooperate with people who are saying, "Yes, but…" is just to let them win, just let them have their way. It's easy. When they've won, then you can continue in your own positive direction, and you don't have to be involved in their point of view at all.
