In the course of this seminar, John-Roger tells the story of a mother who told him she dreaded shopping with her child because he begged her for toys. “It was like this kid was running her,” he says. So J-R suggested she ask him what he was wishing for. J-R continues, “So she told her son, ‘Honey, why don’t you go through the toy section and tell me all the things you want.’ The child ran through, saying, ‘I wish I had this, and I wish I had that…’ At the end of the toy department, she said to the boy, ‘Now, which one do you want?’ He said, ‘I don’t want any.’ He already had his wishes,” J-R observes.

Well, how does that story apply to you? Just ask yourself, what are you deeply wishing for? Some kind of food? Alcohol? Entertainment? Sex? Love? How about spiritual liberation? Do you wish for that? J-R says, “That may be a part of what you wish, but liberation is being free inside of you and having other people free inside of you — that’s liberation. Then the thing that arises spontaneously is love. If you have to create love, if you have to seek it out, it is not natural, and it will not last. When it just arises spontaneously out of your being, you’re in the heart of God; you’re in the very center of beingness.”

“What does the mind need? Nothin’!” J-R says, pointing the way to handling our wishes. He goes on, “What does the mind want? Everything. What do the emotions need? Nothing. What do the emotions desire? Everything. How can the physical body handle all these things? It can’t,” he says. “If we’re going to be blessed with a sense of fulfillment, the thing to do is to move to that that is going on,
