John-Roger speaks for many of us when he starts this seminar by saying, “Some people don’t have those experiences that are of a transcendental nature and because of that, sometimes they feel like they’re being left out or their spiritual trip isn’t as good as somebody else’s.” Haven’t you thought that at least once?
J-R continues, “I think it’s interesting that people attempt to enter into understanding in a very strange way. They’ll write me letters saying, ‘I don’t understand my wife,’ or ‘I don’t understand what’s going on.’ And I think, ‘Why are you so concerned about it? Nobody says you have to understand it.’ See, understanding isn’t an intellectual process, and a lot of people think it should be, like, ‘I should understand in my head what they’re doing.’ I say, ‘No, you shouldn’t. It isn’t taking place in your head. That’s like saying ‘I should be an elephant’ when you’re not, and you insist upon being an elephant. And what can be done about that? Nothing.”
J-R goes on, “Then people say, ‘So what is the process of understanding?’ And my answer is: the process of understanding is experiencing.” Of course, J-R doesn’t leave us there. Using examples and stories, he makes it very clear how we can understand what’s going on through experience. It has to do with acceptance, ignoring the opinions of others, and freedom!
