When you meditate, the ego wants to feel like it has accomplished something after sitting there all that time. But why give up your precious attention to your ego? That will just create defeat: Anxieties, animosities, depressions, insanities, and general craziness. Instead of allowing your ego to push you around, observe, then choose wisely where you will place your thoughts and actions.

It becomes a hard life when we pray to God for all sorts of help but we won't be quiet, sit back, and listen for the answers God provides. Don't dominate the conversation: Be silent and listen a little. In other words, meditate. Quiet down and observe your life.

It is rare in meditation that you will hear anything. And when you do, more often than not, it is just your own mind chattering at you, and your meditation will seem fruitless. What should you do then? My advice is: listen.

Q: When I do my spiritual exercises I often experience anxiety and anger. What do you suggest I do? A: The anger and anxiety is being surfaced when you do your spiritual exercises. If those feelings were not in you then they would not be coming up. You are being given the opportunity to break through those patterns as they come up for you so you can look at what is coming up as a blessing. Observe the feelings and continue on doing your spiritual exercises. Releasing that during spiritual exercises can be a beautiful action.

Q: During meditation one time I had a beautiful experience that was very uplifting. I have not had anything nearly that nice since and I wonder if there is something now wrong with my spiritual exercises? J-R: What you had was just that, an experience. It may have been more beautiful or fulfilling than what you are used to, but nevertheless, it was an experience. There are more experiences to come so don't get locked into the last one. Just continue on and open to the next experience coming in. They will be greater; the inner unfoldment gets more dynamic all the time.
