This is another of a series of conversations between John Morton, Spiritual Director of MSIA, and Laren Bright. In it, John thinks through how to live a rich practical life and he helps us sort out our relationship with the parts of us usually vying for our attention: the spiritual and the material.
Laren says, “You seem to have a very interactive relationship with God and with Jesus the Christ. What’s that like in your life?” John’s response, “It demonstrates itself in ordinariness. One of my constant prayers is that I express the highest consciousness I know: unconditional loving, acceptance and forgiveness. Am I aware of other states? Yes! I’m aware of a reactive state that is also competing for my attention.”
John continues, “How can we practice the difference between religion and spirituality, since spirituality is the natural state of our consciousness, the most natural state? It’s my experience that we don’t always act out of that state. We act out of our thoughts, or our mentality, or our emotionality, or maybe our materiality.” And therein lies our challenge, as the ordinary Souls we are.
