A Loving Change of Plans – A Living In Service Story

A minister in New Mexico shared about an 89-year-old friend who has been in hospice care for a while now. She and her husband had been visiting her regularly. On one visit, the octogenarian suggested that they wait to come the next time until she called with the message, “Today is a good day, and I’m happy to have you visit.”

About 3 months had passed when the phone rang.  It was the son of their friend letting them know that, “Today is a good day and she would love to see them.”

The minister who was on her way out the door for a long needed outing for herself stopped and checked inside, asking herself what was important in that moment. Although she had been looking forward to this day alone, it was clear to her that visiting her friend was more on purpose.

She and her husband visited with their friend for close to 3 hours, which had not been possible before. They laughed, told stories, and everyone was lifted. The son said he had not seen his mother like this in months.

This minister was aware of the oneness of faith that was present. Her friend, a devout Catholic, and she a minister in MSIA, were together in the oneness and the joy of Spirit which was palpable to all.  Letting go of what was planned to be in service to what was present blessed everyone.
