A Planting We Will Go: Light Column Ministry in Seattle

Article imageIt was a beautiful, sunlit day with rich blue skies as Michael Rhodes, Laurie Jones, Doug Hughes and I met together to plant Light columns in and around Seattle, Washington. Asking the Spirit to guide us for the highest good, we selected our first location in Bellevue, a nearby city to Seattle. As we are all about practical spirituality, we chose our first location to be the Whole Foods in Bellevue, which aside from obvious benefits was also near a major highway interchange and close to downtown Bellevue. We met behind the store, where, much to our delight, we discovered a bunch of stacked hay bales! Perfect for a photo shoot! The pictures capture the joy and happiness that was present as we gathered together to do service in Spirit’s name. (Or was that joy and happiness that we were about to chow down at Whole Foods? Ha ha!)

As we held hands and called in the Light, creating a vision of a column of Light, the scenery faded away. Instead of being next to some hay bales in back of the Whole Foods parking lot, we were in…the Spirit. As the words were spoken, time became still, and God did the work.

For the remainder of the afternoon, we followed our best thoughts and our inner guidance to lead us to the locations where we were to plant more Light Columns. We were particularly drawn to places where one or more of us had encountered particularly “dense” or “sticky” energy, or places where we knew negative expressions had occurred. We stopped at a parking lot in an industrial area of town, and after planting the Light column and returning to our cars, I felt like we were a spiritual version of… the Mod Squad. Perhaps, the Light Pod Squad, as Michael suggested! We were by then traveling in one car, for ease of parking and logistics.

Next we headed to the top tourist site in Seattle, and perhaps Washington State: the Space Needle. Having planted Light columns there four years ago prior to the Traveler’s visit, it was a great reunion. As became typical, we ended up “spontaneously” winding through a less-traveled path to suddenly come upon… A peace pole! In a special way it was like coming home. We set up around the pole and planted our Light column centered there, but also taking in the entire structure of the Space Needle and a good swath (or God swath) of the surrounding vicinity. The Ani-Hus we chanted at the end were resonant in a way I had never heard before.

Part of a Light Column Adventure is spontaneity, as has been described. It came into play again at the Space Needle. We went inside the tourist gift shop that took up the lower level of the Needle, looking for postcards of Seattle to send the Travelers. At a certain point after purchasing the cards, we happened to be standing in a circle, relaxed and discussing a few things quietly. Then, spontaneously and without moving, we moved into another Light Column planting process. To the outside observer, it probably would have looked like some people hanging out together, in a relaxed, gentle way. We used our inner vision while also maintaining presence in the “outside” world. At the end of the process, we chanted, but internally, silent on the outside, as people came and went nearby.

As we left for the day, agreeing to meet again for more Light Column Planting in the coming months, I felt the special joy inside that comes when the Spirit is present. In the presence of Spirit and Lightbearers, I felt at home, purposeful, and very, very grateful.
