In Memory of Fred Frick

Article imageWednesday Evening, February 16, 2005. MSIA Staff member Fred Frick sat down to dinner in Prana’s beautiful dining room. John Forrister (MSIA staff member and fellow Prana resident) stole his dessert and then proceeded to blame it on Julie Ireland (also an MSIA staff member and Prana resident). They laughed and joked as they did on most evenings. After dinner, Fred lumbered off to his room with a bag full of popcorn and a bucket of ice, smiling as he greeted fellow staff member, Hugo Alvarado who commented on Fred’s large stomach — asking when the baby was due (as was the rumor…). Fred laughed, went on to his bedroom and sometime that evening transitioned into the Spirit world.

Fred was known for his dedication to service as an MSIA staff member and resident for over 12 years. He started out volunteering in the Distribution Department (as it was called back then). In 1993 Fred was hired full time and within a few short months became one of our beloved Prana residents, sharing in the joy and service of living at the home of the Traveler. When asked by one of his friends outside of MSIA, whether it was on purpose for him to be living and working here, Fred answered, “Oh yes. Oh yes. These are the people I want to be with. This is the place I want to be.” On March 8th, Fred would have turned 65.

On Monday, February 21, 2005, a memorial service was held at Prana to celebrate Fred’s life. MSIA staff, residents, volunteers, friends and family gathered to share their memories, experiences, and stories. The laughter and the tears flowed in and out throughout the evening, as each of us, in our own way, acknowledged the passing of this beloved Soul. Over 90 people came to celebrate and honor Fred Frick.

What stands out more than anything was Fred’s ability to express his loving, kindness, and playfulness through his sense of humor. Though sometimes irreverent, the innocence and joyful nature of his banter came through his huge loving heart. At MSIA Staff Meetings and Prana House Meetings he was well known for quick quips and hilarious heckles that would have some of us rolling in the isles. What made his humor and energy so special was that it was done out of loving.

The memorial service ended with all of us singing, “Happy Trails” and communing together in the dining room for some of Fred’s favorite desserts: ice cream, apple crumble, brownies and, of course, popcorn.

Dear Fred, thank you for being. We all love you. I love you. God Bless You on your journey home, Beloved.
