Giving Thanks: Our Heartfelt Project

For several years now, John and I have participated once or twice a year, in what we call the “Turkey Project”– which is making sandwiches to hand out to folks living on the streets.
We always do the project either on Thanksgiving or close to it. We invite friends over for an early meal and once we’ve eaten, the party ramps up!! This year, we had our dinner together on Thanksgiving and planned the Turkey Project for the next sunny day – Sunday.

Our 20# Turkey went in the oven at 7 am. It felt just like Christmas morning to me; the energy of Spirit was so present!! The bird was carved by noon; and the team assembled at 12:30 pm.
We spread out loaves of bread and made as many turkey sandwiches as we had turkey. (We pick turkey because it is inexpensive and goes a long way!) Next, we made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (for vegetarians and those without teeth). The P & J was donated by a rep in the food industry and, for the first time ever, we had apples donated by a local farmer plus some oranges.

We had three strong teams of two people each. John & I were the only ones who’d done this before. It was very exciting to welcome new people to our adventure!! Half the team was MSIA, (the other half are in the Movement also; they just don’t know it yet).

All the food was blessed; and we sent the Light ahead with the teams; and to all those we would serve, and those who would be in service to us. We split our bounty into three sets (sandwiches and fruit) and with a song in our hearts, we fanned out across the city of Portland, to places where we know it is more difficult for people to get to a rescue mission for a meal.

Three hours later, we were complete. All three teams reported wonderful experiences. Speaking for our team… we meet many beautiful souls! I’ve learned so much doing this project over the years!
Two things I know for sure: first, that these are my brothers and sisters; and second, that there are masters that live and walk among us on the streets. It is a wonderful, Heartfelt way to spend an afternoon. As one of our team mates said, she felt there were many at our Thanksgiving table this year! What a grand blessing!

In Gratitude,
Connie and John Rawlings-Dritsas

  1. What a wonderful way to share God’s Grace. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.
