Light Columns for the Inauguration

Article imageAs part of an ongoing monthly project, the Washington, DC MSIA community plants Light Columns at various sites around the Nation’s Capital. In January 2005, with preparations well underway for the Presidential Inauguration, we naturally gravitated toward the US Capitol Building, the site of the swearing-in ceremony for the second term of George W. Bush.

The inauguration of a president has become truly an American spectacle, full of pageantry, parades, parties and people. As we arrived on the Capitol grounds this cold January morning, we could sense excitement and anticipation in the air. So much to do to get ready for the celebration! Workers were building viewing stands, mulching the grounds, putting up fences, and setting up chairs and heated party tents.

We were there to plant Light columns, so we got to work, too. We decided to walk around the building, enjoy the views, and pause at various points to ask for the presence and protection of the Light. It was a very peaceful and joyful experience. Come with us on our walk.

Much has been said about the unprecedented security that will be in place for the first presidential inauguration since 9/11. We passed by so many temporary fences, from serious, chain-link varieties to softer ones made of vertical wooden slats. We got the impression that people would definitely be penned in, or kept out, of each area. That’s why it delighted us to watch the wildlife scampering around the Capitol grounds. The birds and squirrels were totally free, flying and climbing up, down and around these same fences. And it looks like they will get some of the best views of the ceremonies.

We’ll close with a picture from a previous Light Column project at the White House. Join us in sending Light to the President and all those who will assume leadership roles during this administration.
