“Spiritual Warriors” Opens and Closes the 2nd Annual Beverly Hills Hi-Def Film Festival — A Volunteer’s Perspective

Article imageEver thought that going to the movies could be considered service? I assisted at the screening of Spiritual Warriors on the 7th at the Fine Arts Theatre. Spiritual Warriors had been given the honor of opening and closing the High Definition Film Festival that ran from the 12/27/07 – 1/7/08. We had a blast! Or at least that was my experience. It was a blast of fun but especially a blast of Light, which for me carries over into the next couple of days.

I never go to a screening of Spiritual Warriors expecting the same thing even though I have seen it, I don’t know, maybe seven times, which is meager compared to some! I always open up for a fresh experience, not just with the movie but also with the crowd that is present on that night. I love connecting with people, holding the Light, showing them to their seats, handing out Spiritual Warrior books, interacting with them in the foyer and trying to answer some of their inspired questions after the movie, when they can’t get to Jsu.

The screening on the 7th was no exception. On this particular night there was a mixed crowd as usual, first time viewers, second time etc viewers, even the actor Edward James Olmos came out for the screening. There were kids — in fact why don’t we see more kids at the screenings they are the hard core fans — brandishing Spiritual Warriors t-shirts, full of questions for Jsu about how he got to the top of the pyramid. The kids took charge of the mic during Q&A’s exclaiming “Jsu, you rock!” and eagerly telling their parents “I wanna see part II!!!”, as their parents herd them out the door. Oh and not to mention the fact that these kids totally GET the movie. So if you know any kids bring them along to the next screening.

This time I didn’t sit in on the movie, I hung out in the foyer with the rest of the assistants watching the myriad of responses towards the film as we observed people running back and forth for popcorn and drinks. Some looked as though they were so intensely involved that they were breaking into a sweat!

This time I sat in on the Q&A, which is always very entertaining and inspiring, watching Jsu move from the ridiculous to the profound, as people make the film their own and decide on its significance for them. In the hot seat were Robert Easton, Leigh Taylor-Young, Rick Ojeda & Jsu Garcia, taking questions from an audience who just wanted more. Our beloved John Morton was also in the audience and of course J-R was in the house, in Spirit.

So if you are looking for a FUN way to serve that is really uplifting and you reap the benefits days after, consider coming and hanging out with us all at the next Spiritual Warriors screening, and while you’re at it, bring a friend to see the movie and have a unique experience!
