Paul Kaye, co-author of Living the Spiritual Principles of Health and Well-Being knows how to move an audience from stitches to the sacred. Paul, like his co-author, John-Roger, moves energy like a maestro conducting a symphony. Paulās premiere of his 100 Ways to Health & Well-Being workshop last Tuesday is a prime example. Paul expounds on the virtues of cold showers and the group giggles. They howl when he goes on a comedic anti-sugar rant. Silence shimmering with love then fills the space. Quietly, he speaks about the āecstatic moment where you realized you are being breathed.ā
The author, poet and President of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness seems heaven bent on encouraging self-care. āTake care of yourself so you can take care of others,ā is 1 of 3 primary principles espoused by the church. Paulās research is thorough; his approach is spiritual; his implementation is practical.
Caution: Many of Paulās 100 Ways to Health & Well-Being tips require courage and self-discipline. (Also, as emphasized by Paul during the workshop – consult your physician with any concerns.)
Tip #1: Take Cold Showers
Why in Heavenās name would anybody subject themselves to this practice?
Cold Showers:
- Increases alertness
- Stimulates weight loss
- Tightens and tone skin
- Speeds up muscle recovery (Think your favorite sports star applying a cold pack.)
- Relieves depression
- Boosts fertility
- Builds strong willpower
- Improves emotional resilience
Note: Japanese Shinto monks and pilgrims practice the centuries old shugendo and misogi. Both rituals involve purifying oneself by plunging into waterfallsā¦Even in winter!
Tip #2: Just Say No to Refined Sugar
You probably know all the reasons why but hereās a reminder.
Refined sugar:
- Spikes insulin
- āCauses sticky cellsā which lead to sticky problems (like diabetes)
- Your body works overtime with sugar injections
As one who loves sugar, this is a tough one. Paulās conversation with a physician saddened me. āThe smallest lifestyle change can avoid diabetes. But most people say, āDoc, canāt you please just give me a pill?āā
To quote Paul: āBuddha talked about the middle way. We said, yea. Can we do it another way?ā
Encouragement for fellow sugar fans: Paul talks about Yogurtland being ābasic self heaven.ā He seems to say, froyo (in moderation) is fine. Just skip the million dessert toppings.
Tip #3: Take a Cue from the Navy Seals ā Breathe!
Yes, meditation, spiritual exercises are sublime. But remembering to breathe is also a lifesaver. Paul says, āBreathĀ is where we can always go for balance.ā
Hereās how the Navy Seals release stress:
- Take in the breathĀ for 4 counts
- Hold the breathĀ for 4 counts
- Let the breathĀ out for 4 counts
P.s. It really works!!!
