Walking in the Light, Literally

Thom Storm and Cindy Storm

It all started with a VHS video checked out from the Duluth, Minnesota public library. That was 25 years ago on April 10, 1996. I was 46 years old. My wife Cindy thought I might be interested in starting a “health walk” exercise program. She gave me a journal to keep track of my progress, and encouraged me to give it a try. I decided that for me to have an “official” health walk, I needed to walk at least 20 minutes a day at a reasonable pace. And so, I started.

At a certain point I looked in my journal, and realized I had walked 13 days in a row. I decided to set a goal of 25 days in a row. Once I achieved that, it went to 50 days, then 100 and then a year. After 365 conservative days of health walks, we had a small celebration at home, and a champagne toast. I thought, well what’s next? And my answer to myself was, keep going. And now I have gone 25 years without missing a single day.

Why am I telling you this? Because it has been so much more than a health walk streak. It has been a silent ministry. I have walked in all kinds of weather and in all kinds of situations, circumstances and environments, just like a ministry. Through it all, I have kept chugging along, as somewhat of a walking Light column.

Often in the morning when I wake up, I ask inwardly for J-R to let me meet whoever I am supposed to send the Light to that day. Of course none of people I bump into are a coincidence. Sometimes it is super obvious, and sometimes not so much. I just take each walk as it unfolds to me, and am grateful to be an initiate of the Traveler out in the world, quietly holding the Light.

Right now we are in the very early stages of spring in Duluth. It is a great time to go out for a walk. The creeks and streams have thawed out and are running down the ravines again with their own roaring sound current. The robins have been back for about a week, and are adding their voices to nature’s choir. It is an absolutely wonderful time to be alive with the promise of new life.

In my ordination J-R said, “…as you walk within the honesty of your own truthfulness, keeping your thoughts clear and directed towards that which is Light and God, then the needs of the world will be taken care of for you in your natural progression.”

It has been all of that and so much more.

Oh how grateful I am to be able to continue my health walk streak, while walking in the Light with my beloved walking buddy, John-Roger.

  1. Thank you Thom – your silent ministry « bumped into » me today through your text!
I’m 46, and started walking regularly as a health/light/ministry/keeping sane kind of routine, a little over a year ago.
Your shared experience means more than you can imagine. I felt your light and JRs smile as I read.
Thank HU! With love&light from Switzerland!

    1. Wow, thank you for your kind words. My Health walks have been a magic elixir for me. I am now 71 years old, and in radiant health. I attribute it to walking and MSIA
