I Had Come Home

As a Missionary kid raised in Africa, I always was taught that God was loving and forgiving.   My parents’ devoted service in wanting to free the natives from whatever primitive fear bound them, and free the women from being considered merely a “jom” (thing–like the goats or cows a man owned) inspired me as I grew up. Their willingness to sacrifice being with me all through childhood, where the school was 2 days away thru the jungle;  and thru all the  formative teen high school years they had to leave me in America, taught me what TRUST in God was. Especially when I had my own children !

After a Christian Women’s college, I was inspired to go to Princeton Theological Seminary, where my Dad had gone. There I met Bob, who asked me why I’d come. I said “I want to study God”. And I’ve been doing it, experientially, ever since !  We married and embarked on 40 years of ministering to 4 congregations. Through all this time, described in my memoir, “Mish Kid To Mystic”, I was increasingly dissatisfied with the depth of my spiritual life. I quietly, and privately, looked into many venues offered in the ’70’s: Charismatic Movement, Astrology, Bioenergetics, The Feminine Mystique, Transactional Analysis. Mercifully I avoided drugs. I  read at a furious pace: psychology, Be Here Now, Eastern mystics, Christian mystics, mystic clairvoyants.  I was really “ripe” !

So–no coincidences–I was hit by  car and sought healing.  Led to an MSIA practitioner, I was invited to a Seminar, where I met JR, and shortly went to a Retreat.  There I had a powerful feeling I hadn’t experienced before, and asked JR if there were any other professional clergy wives in the Movement that I could talk to.  He said “Nope.  You’re the first”. Scary.  But I was hooked, and took the very next Insight that came East. Blasted by the Spirit, I took the next II, and felt gloriously that I had COME HOME !  This was what I had been searching for at Seminary, as a pastor’s wife, in all my groping questing. I devoured Discourses hungrily, loved their UN-heaviness (after theological studies), went for Ordination and later USM and PTS and every place I could go to hear JR.  I helped create the ACTS seminar (with Dan Kendrick) which aimed to present a Christian Insight to churches.  And, after 30 years of daughter Susan & her husband Gavin and I sharing the Light with Bob, he joined us!  Hallelujah.

I hope to reach any other folks who came from a conservative/Christian background, who might have seminar questions I had when I first encountered MSIA. I love you all, and send blessings! Mary Lou Jacoby
